HCMAS : Hwa Chong Model Asean Summit

I got a lot of experience from joining this one-week conference in Singapore. I had an opportunity to develop both critical thinking skills and speaking skills. I got more understanding in other countries and current issues, especially in ASEAN regions. There were students from different schools attending this conference. I was assigned to be in an environment committee and the issues we were working on were: combatting the negative effects of deforestation and development and adaptation of renewable sources of energy. The South-east Asian rainforests are one of the most important rainforests on Earth, owing to the fact that it has a biological richness and diversity. However, currently, there is a significant loss in the area of forest in Southeast Asia due to the fact that it is experiencing deforestation rates higher than almost anywhere else on Earth. Furthermore, It was found that with the rapid urbanization and modernization of ASEAN countries, ASEAN as a whole has seen a 50 percent increase in energy demand. It potentially runs the risk of relying on non-renewable energy sources despite the limited amount of fossil fuels and other non-renewable sources. Furthermore, the usage of this type of energy causes lots of environment effects, for example, pollution. After long debates, the committee came up with two declarations which all members believed that they could tackle the problems effectively. We also got an opportunity to meet Singaporean friends and learn their cultures.
